For the past twenty-one years Carolyn has been a nurse practitioner at a small trauma hospital. As a licensed practical nurse, she plainly knew what to tell her patients regarding their health issues but in her off-duty life, however, she clearly didn't practice what she taught. As an example, she frequently drank in an excessive and irresponsible manner, she made it a habit to stay away from exercising, she smoked nearly two packs of cigarettes per day, and she was just about eighteen pounds overweight.
One morning on her way to her job, Carolyn got into an automobile accident. Since the accident was her fault and because her speech was jumbled when she spoke, the arresting highway patrolman gave her a breathalyzer test a breathalyzer test. As per standard police policy, when an individual gets involved in a vehicle accident and does not pass a sobriety test, the individual has to spend at least eight hours in the county jail.
Actually, Carolyn should have known better than to drive after she had been drinking because she recently went to an alcohol abuse awareness class at the hospital that centered on issues, statistics, and information about long term alcohol effects such as the following: alcohol poisoning, DUIs, binge drinking, and the main differences between alcoholism and alcohol abuse.
Needless to say, Carolyn felt embarrassed about her car accident. Moreover, she was feeling quite a bit of shame about the fact that the accident was her fault. And probably worst of all she experienced quite a bit of shame about the fact that she was driving after she had a few drinks. As Carolyn reflected on her circumstance, however, she thought how fortunate she was because later in life her drinking problems could have been a lot worse due to the long term effects of alcohol.
In any case, Carolyn's humiliation about her vehicle accident encouraged her to reconsider her life and make some substantial and beneficial changes. First, she was going to quit drinking in an excessive and hazardous manner. This would obviously help her steer clear of long term alcohol abuse. Second, she was going to stop smoking. Third, she was going to go on a strict weight-loss diet. And fourth, she was going to begin exercising.
As troubled and depressed as Carolyn was about the entire vehicle accident situation, she used this painful experience as a trigger for healthy change. Furthermore, she used her agonizing experience as a real source of discovery that she had been failing to address her own health while she professionally told her patients how to live a more healthy life. After all had been said and done, she eventually saw the double standard in her behavior and came to a decision that she would live her life as a constructive source of encouragement for others.
