A Young Man Needs Therapy For His Intense Depression, Relationship Difficulties, And For His Drug Addiction And Alcoholism

Roughly eight months ago I had dinner with a thirty-five-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from intense depression, has relationship issues, and who is dependent on alcohol and drugs. As affirmed by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug dependency and his severe depression that has had the most to do with his perpetual relationship problems.

As stated by Benjamin, he is so overwhelmed by his relationship problems and by both of his medical conditions that he basically has little or no energy to complete much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to finish four semesters of grad school in music theory.

Benjamin's situation makes me wonder if he is an example of an individual who can look within and perceive his drinking problems and drug addiction and do something positive about these difficulties. Or, on the other hand, if he is an individual who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets drug and alcohol dependency treatment that leads to lasting recovery.

It may be asked how rehab would help his drug and alcohol addiction. For starters, there are a number of recently produced doctor-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin through the alcohol and drug detoxification process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse. Second, in rehabilitation he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to concede the fact that there is utterly nothing helpful about chemical dependency and abusive and unhealthy drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the path to shattered relationships, legal problems, a premature death, financial difficulties, poor work and school performance, and deteriorating health. Fourth, treatment for his depression and for his relationship difficulties might help him cope with these mental health difficulties more effectively and possibly create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in counseling he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.

Since Benjamin doesn't have the motivation to do much of anything in his life, it is obvious that he desperately needs some hope for a more fulfilling lifestyle. And the sad thing is that hope is almost everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the treatment he requires for his severe depression and drug dependence and alcohol addiction and continue with his treatment protocol.

Benjamin is simply too young to be dejected in life. He doesn't realize this at the moment but if he can learn how to abstain from alcohol and drugs via alcohol and drug rehabilitation and get the treatment he requires for his severe depression, he can reorient his life and start living with passion, direction, and with self-respect.

More solid relationships, positive change, self esteem, and a meaningful life are clearly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can get motivated to obtain the professional rehab he needs, follow through with his therapy program, live his life in a dependency-free and healthy way, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about life.
