Ingrown toenail infection (onychocryptoisis) is a common nail infection that occurs when the nail penetrates the skin all-around the nail or perhaps paronychium. This is extremely painful and if they are not treated the in-grown toe will become infected with bacteria causing the swelling of paronychium.

Grown ups between the ages of 20 - 35 yrs are mostly at risk of ingrown toenail disease. Most common reasons include; wearing very tight shoes or even smaller shoe size, poor nail care such as trimming the fingernails or toenails in a curve instead of a straight line, deformity of the toenails or of the nail bed, an injury to the toe nail may cause the nail to grow irregular and finally a swollen foot or a fleshy toe. Nevertheless, just remember poor nail care is considered the most common reason for getting an ingrown toenail disease.

This toenail disease is not difficult to identify provided you know its signs and symptoms. The main and most obvious indication is pain. Any contact with the infected toe will lead to ache. Other signs or symptoms are swelling and redness of the affected region, discharge of pus or clear fluid mixed a faint site of blood.

Treatment depends on the situation of the in-grown toe nail infection. Home care involves soaking the affected foot in lukewarm salty water. However, discharge of blood or watery fluids means seeking medical advice. Antibiotics having penicillin can be taken as they fight off bacterial disease. However, try to get the ingrown part of the nail taken out to reduce the discomfort, avoid infection and for speedy recovery.

Lastly, ensure proper hygiene as well as nail care. Cut your nails in a straight line instead of a curve but not very small. Also, avoid wearing ill-fitting shoes as they apply pressure to your feet which can result in a toenail penetrating the nail bed particularly if you wear such type of footwear often
