Social Anxiety Symptoms Are Generally Very Confusing

Social anxiety is one of the many kinds of anxiety disorders. Just like the other forms of this disorder, the symptoms are often very real to the person suffering from them. In fact, they can be so severe that complete avoidance of certain situations that may trigger an attack of anxiety is encouraged. Knowing the symptoms and what to look for can help a person who might have social anxiety, to acknowledge the need to seek assistance to control, and even overcome, the condition.

Since several of the symptoms of social anxiety are consistent with that of life threatening and severe physical conditions, it is almost always recommended that a physician should be the one to determine the exact cause of the problem. Even though the symptoms are clearly that of social anxiety, such as a grave fear of speaking in public or going to job interviews, a physical assessment is almost always called for.

Some of the more common symptoms of social anxiety involve:

- Dizziness. This symptom can emerge in the midst of an anxiety producing social encounter and even when one is expecting the event. Since it can also be a manifestation of a variety of medical conditions, getting it checked is sensible.

- Heart palpitations. People with social anxiety usually complain of rapid heart beats, chest pain and general discomfort. These conditions can also be symptoms of a heart attack.

- Nausea, stomach complaints. These symptoms can quite often indicate a bout of social anxiety, as well as a host of other physical conditions.

- Sweating, blushing and trembling. These are obvious external physical manifestations of a variety of conditions, including social anxiety. If they are present in the midst of a fearful social situation, they are likely caused by social anxiety. A medical examination is still highly recommended.

- Other symptoms. Those with social anxiety also complain of such things as a failure to concentrate, sleep or enjoy life. A few people find that they suffer from headaches, depression and other symptoms like, a tightening throat, dry mouth and shivers.

Social anxiety can present itself as an extreme fear of a specific kind of social situation. It can also impact on all facets of life outside the comforts of home. In severe cases, people may try to completely remove themselves from most situations that have been known to trigger extreme feelings of fear.

Getting a complete medical and psychological assessment to remove other potential triggers can put a person with social anxiety on the right path to a normal state of mind. If the condition is properly diagnosed and treated, there is a very good possibility that patients can master the condition. In many instances, a combination of medications and therapy will be recommended to help sufferers regain control over their lives and social situations. Being a little wary in public places is quite natural. When fears take over, there is most likely a more serious, fundamental problem.
