The Company Leaders Launch Several Programs To Cut The Costs Related To Poor Employee Work Performance

Christine is a fifty-four-year-old woman who is the top administrator in the human resources department at a large electroplating company. To help diminish the costs correlated with poor employee work performance, work related injuries, increasing absenteeism, excessive sick days, and employee alcoholism and alcohol abuse, Christine and the other company executives initiated a number of programs that made the work environment considerably more safe, more productive, and healthy.

As an example, twelve years ago Christine and the other company executives established an Employee's Assistance Program so that all the employees had access to quality psychological counseling for their personal problems that could adversely influence their health, personal well-being, and their work performance.

As another illustration, approximately eight-and-a-half years ago Christine and the other members of top management constructed an avant-garde exercise and workout room complete with mirrors, weights, a personal trainer during business hours, scales, many different types of exercise equipment, and exercise charts.

As another example, about a year-and-a-half ago, Christine and the other members of upper management put into operation a "Weight-Watchers" class that currently meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 4:30 PM until 5:50 PM. In addition, the VIPs employed a weight-loss nurse to run the program.

In the last twelve months, in a joint venture with the Employee's Assistance Program, Christine and the other company executives implemented an "Anger Management" class for workers who want to learn how to better deal with their temper.

In the last three months, Christine and the other company administrators launched a drug and alcohol testing program that is associated with their alcohol and drug abuse prevention program. In fact, Christine is the key person in the company responsible for getting the message out to all the employees about the drug and alcohol abuse prevention program as well as the drug and alcohol testing program.

Another fairly recent enhancement to the drug and alcohol abuse prevention program is a class entitled "Alcohol Statistics and Facts." The reasoning behind this alcohol statistics facts class is that more than a few people fail to grasp the full impact of the consequences of alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency without first reading about some of the alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction facts and statistics that are available. Consequently, one of the goals of this class is to provide a variety of alcoholism and alcohol abuse statistics and facts to help employees gain a better understanding of the many of issues that are associated with abusive and hazardous drinking and how they can avert these issues from happening.

Most recently, Christine and the other members of top management, through feedback from workers, created a class that centers directly on acute drinking entitled "What is Alcoholism"? This class meets every Friday morning an hour before work and focuses mostly on the differences between alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse, on some of the key differences between statistics on alcohol abuse and statistics on alcoholism, and on the different forms of rehabilitation that are available for people who have alcohol drinking problems such as individuals who drink in an irresponsible manner.

Even though each and every one of these health and preventative maintenance programs was anything but inexpensive, top management personnel feel that they are several thousands of dollars ahead by providing all of their employees with a safe, healthy, and more productive working situation.
